Please Help Med Student Hamzah Save Family and Dream Amid War
United States
Hamzah and his family of 7 are in need of our support to buy a tent, warm clothes and shoes, and other necessities. Like many others, they fled their home in the north of Gaza with nothing after it was destroyed in November of 2023.
Hamzah and his family currently live in a tattered tent made of sheets and blankets — like the forts many of us made as children. This tent provides no shelter from the harsh winter rains and cold. Hamzah has sought assistance from a local team in order to obtain a proper tent that can fit his whole family and is capable of withstanding the winter.
We are collecting $725 to allow Hamzah to purchase the large tent, and we are additionally raising $375 per person to provide each member of the family with a jacket and shoes. The cost of essential goods is sky-high in the Gaza Strip due to the blockade of aid shipments, and we are also forced to account for the approximately 25% of funds that will be deducted as fees when Hamzah goes to access the transferred donations.
The vetting process for this campaign has included the verification of Hamzah’s Palestinian Authority-issued ID, a comparison of Instagram content posted before and after October 7, 2023, and a live video chat via WhatsApp.
Can you please pitch in for Hamzah’s family to have jackets, shoes and shelter this winter?
Thank you. The continued kindness of people from many countries has allowed me to schedule another bank wire to Hamzah, his mother and his sister. It will hopefully arrive by the end of the week, and it is impossible to overstate how badly it is needed.
Gaza is now in stage 5 famine. Today, a ghastly mockery of aid was “allowed” in; it was an extraordinarily small amount that has not brought any relief to the vast majority of families who continue to starve. Any flour that trickles in will be available for purchase only at an exorbitant price, and this is the only way we know to procure food for the Al-Attar family.
If you will permit me to invoke your kindness once more, I would ask that you please, please share Hamzah’s fundraiser with a few friends and family members who may be in a position to help. I know that these are financially precarious times for many of us; I am grateful for all you have given, sometimes repeatedly, and do not want to ask that you give beyond your capacity. If you know people who have expressed a desire to assist those in Gaza, we would appreciate your mentioning Hamzah’s fundraiser to them.
As before, I am uploading images for the bank transfer I made to Hamzah last week. For privacy purposes, my name and the name of Hamzah’s friend (the account holder) are blacked out; I have indicated in the memo to his friend that these funds are for Hamzah.
Thank you for your caring humanity.
To Francesca of @storiedallaltromondo and to the many caring followers of her account who gave so kindly to Hamzah’s campaign last week: thank you. Because of your influx of support, this campaign received more donations in a single day than ever before, and it has propelled Hamzah’s to become the 34th most popular Chuffed campaign in Palestine this week. This is enormously important in making the campaign more visible to new donors visiting the Chuffed website, and it is completely thanks to you. Thank you for caring and for taking action to support my friend and his family.
I am attaching photos of my most recent bank wire to Hamzah on June 18, which includes all new donations gathered from @storiedallaltromondo . Hamzah’s friend is allowing him to use his bank account to receive donations, so I have blacked out his name for his privacy and safety. Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions.
Grazie mille per il vostro amore e la vostra solidarietà.
I am profoundly grateful to all those who have contributed to this campaign, some on repeated occasions. Our donations are not capable of ending this catastrophe, but they have had real, tangible, meaningful impacts. Hamzah has used a portion of the raised funds to pay his med school tuition and receive the in-person hospital instruction required of his cohort of future doctors. This is a major step towards the realization of his dream.
With Hamzah’s permission, I must also share the news that the al-Attar family is grieving an unfathomable loss. I am deeply sorry to share that Hamzah’s father, grandmother, sister and brother were martyred by Israel two weeks ago. It is a grief beyond reckoning. Hamzah and his sister Sarah were both badly injured in the bombing of their house, she critically. They are both alive, but in extreme pain and without access to pain medication. In accordance with Hamzah’s wishes, I am including images of their injuries.
Hamzah’s topmost priority is the medical evacuation of his sister, and to this end, we ask that anyone with knowledge of the medical evacuation process please contact him on Instagram @hamzah.alattar.2002. Neither he nor I know whether medical evacuations have completely stopped at this point, or if there is still a chance of paying at the border for exit. We have heard that it may be necessary to work in collaboration with an international aid organization in order to obtain evacuation, but I do not know if this is true. If you have any potentially helpful information, please share it with us.
I have sent four separate bank wires to Hamzah, most recently in late April. He has made it clear that food, diapers for his sister, and possibly pain medication are the most important items for purchase on his list. We have raised the fundraiser goal from $3,725 to $7,000, but to be quite honest, this is a wild guess, as it is impossible to know when this long night of inhumanity will finally be put to an end. The plan, as it stands now, is roughly this: If Hamzah receives enough money to cover the items listed above, he will most likely aim to (a) purchase a tent, as the family is now completely without a home or tent of any kind and sheltering temporarily with others; and/or (b) save up enough money to bribe border guards for his sister’s medical evacuation, if or when this is possible.
The entire Gaza Strip has been made into a famine zone, and with the price of basic foodstuffs now exorbitantly high, your recent donations have been more keenly appreciated than ever. Thank you for helping my friend. He has a beautiful soul, and I have seen how his family and friends speak reverentially of his generosity of spirit. Thank you to all who have so selflessly given something of your own, and thank you to those whose circumstances may permit them to give in the future. If you would, please share this fundraiser with family members, friends or faith groups hoping to make a material difference in Gaza in this critical hour.
Lastly: Because even the most urgently needed, life-sustaining donations will not end this genocide, I invite you to join me in considering the new personal risks that we will agree to accept as people who are serious in our understanding that a free Palestine will free us all.
Our efforts here are dedicated in loving memory to Yaqoub al-Attar. Hamzah’s father was adamant in his desire to see his son become a doctor, and Hamzah is determined to honor his wishes. He is completing what coursework he can online in the hopes that his broken bones will soon heal enough to allow for a return to hospital instruction. He has asked me to share his father’s name, story and legacy of loving encouragement.
